Field of Dreams?

Field of Dreams?

“It looks like Lech, Čech and Rus will meet again in Wrocław,” proclaimed Rafał Dutkiewicz, Mayor of Wrocław, making reference to the legend of the origins of the three Slavic nations of Poland, the Czech Republic and Russia and the fact that these three countries will play each other during Euro 2012. On the other hand, Ryszard Grobelny, Mayor of Poznań, hopes that fans from Ireland, Croatia, and Italy will arrive in their hordes to the Poznań area. Both mayors hope fans from across Europe will breathe new life into their respective cities. However, the authorities of Gdańsk do not conceal their disappointment as they believe that fewer fans will appear in Gdańsk than in cities where the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, England, and Denmark are playing their group games. Poland, Russia, Greece, and the Czech Republic will play their matches in Wrocław much to the delight of the Wrocław authorities. The Euro 2012 schedule includes the following: on 8 June Russia plays the Czech Republic, on 12 June the Czech Republic faces Greece, and on 16 June Poland plays the Czech Republic. “We are extremely happy our southern neighbour is in our group because it means that thousands of Czech fans will come to see the match between Poland and the Czech Republic in Wrocław, which of course is not too far away from the Czech Republic. The Greeks like to have fun, but most do not know Poland and Wrocław, so we hope that the Greeks will discover our city for themselves and will later return at some point,” Dutkiewicz emphasised.
